Sign of the Times: Sad day in cookie world.

This week, sadly, we learned that Mother's Cookies (along with Archway Cookies) had filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations. Tonight we picked up the last package of Mother's Chocolate Chip Cookies from our local Safeway shelf. Prominent in my diet growing up on the east coast was Archway's chewy Oatmeal Cookies (along with Dunkin' Munchkins and Friendly's Peppermint Stick Ice Cream). So, I can just imagine how those cookie-lovers, who grew up on the west coast, will feel when the last package of Mother's Cookies leaves their grocery store shelves.

Dang, Archway too? My favorite were the soft apple-filled oatmeal cookies. What's next to go? Yodels? Ring Dings? Yankee Doodles? We'll need to ask Stinky to send us a case . . .

I'm also missing the Mother's iced oatmeal and those frosted circus animal cookies. I don't think I'll ever grow up : (
